Joseph C. Jaynes II, 25, has been placed under arrest and is in police custody Monday, following an overnight shootout with Daytona Beach Police Officers, conducting an overnight patrol near Westside Elementary School.

According to reports, the officers involved in the shootout were out on patrol around 12:30 a.m. Monday when they noticed an open garage door on a home off Piccadilly Drive in Daytona Beach. While looking into the open garage door, officers heard a single gunshot that alerted them to a man, later identified as Jaynes, walking through the backyards of the homes in the area.

Jaynes continued firing at the officers before he retreated into a nearby wooded area, where he remained for several hours continuously exchanging gunfire with police. Crawling out of the woods closer to 4 a.m. and into a parked truck near a canal at the intersection of Laurel Drive and 6th Street, Jaynes proceeded to call 911 from the vehicle about a leg wound, asking for help.

Around 6 a.m., Jaynes crawled out of the truck and laid down in the road surrendering to police. After determining Jaynes was no longer a threat, officers placed him under arrest after 7:30 a.m. transporting him over to Halifax Health Medical Center for a gunshot wound to the leg. The leg wound, believed to have originated from exchanging gunfire with police, is non-life-threatening.

The armed standoff between Jaynes and the Daytona Beach Police Department lasted seven hours, delayed the school day at Westside Elementary, and closed several roads in the area due to public safety concerns.

No officers were reported any injury during the shootout, but the officers involved will be placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, as per the Department’s policy.
