Volusia County Urges Safety: Leave Fireworks to the Professionals!

With Independence Day swiftly approaching, officials from Volusia County Fire Rescue division are urging residents to leave the fireworks displays to the professionals and refrain from using personal fireworks on the beach. Statistics reveal that Independence Day consistently witnesses twice the number of reported fires compared to any other day, with nearly half of these incidents directly attributed to fireworks.

Volusia County's beaches strictly prohibit consumer-grade fireworks where they not only leave a mess, but can frighten nesting sea turtles and cause birds to abandon their nests.  

According to a release, several cities have implemented local ordinances banning personal fireworks.

“The safest way to enjoy fireworks is by watching public displays,” said Fire Chief Joe King. “We caution residents against using fireworks because they can cause fires and injuries when used improperly.”

Recent data reveals that fireworks annually injure over 10,000 individuals, with even seemingly harmless sparklers posing dangers. Sparklers burn at temperatures equivalent to a blow torch, reaching an alarming 1,200 degrees. Children who hold sparklers too close to their bodies risk severe burns or igniting their clothing.

 “Please keep an eye on the children as we celebrate our Nation’s independence,” King urged.

Volusia County Fire Rescue has provided essential safety tips for consumers who purchase legal fireworks:

1. Prohibit young children from handling or igniting fireworks, including sparklers.
2. Avoid placing any part of your body directly over a fireworks device while lighting the fuse.
3. Light fireworks individually and promptly retreat from the area.
4. Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby in case of fire.
5. Once fireworks have ceased burning, douse them with water from a bucket or hose to ensure they are extinguished.
6. Clean up all debris and spent fireworks after the display.
