The Volusia County Beach Safety Division has open lifeguard positions to help keep beachgoers safe during the 2022 summer season and has scheduled mandatory tryouts for those interested in a lifeguard position.

On February 19 and March 15, tryouts will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Ormond Beach YMCA off Sterthaus Drive. Additional tryouts will be held on February 26 and March 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Port Orange YMCA, off City Center Parkway.

All applicants must be at least sixteen years old before June 1 and be able to swim fifty yards freestyle in under thirty seconds, swim five hundred meters freestyle in under ten minutes, and run a half-mile in under three minutes and fifteen seconds. Once considered, applicants will go through a physical screening, a drug screening, and a background check.

According to a release, participants must attend one of the 2022 tryouts, a mandatory 48-hour ocean rescue training, a 40-hour first responder class, and a CPR course or be able to provide proof of equivalence.
